Ten years ago, our Catholic schools came together around a shared belief: by working together, we could strengthen Catholic education for generations to come.

Throughout the past decade, each Erie Catholic campus has continued to carry its own traditions, character, and spirit while remaining connected by one mission: a commitment to helping every student grow in faith, knowledge, and character.

Now, as we prepare to celebrate our 10th anniversary, Erie Catholic is ready to begin its next chapter as one.

           A Shared Spirit and Purpose

This year, families will begin to see a renewed Erie Catholic brand that more clearly reflects who we are becoming: one system with a shared spirit, purpose, and future.

At the heart of this identity are five symbols rooted in the heritage of our campuses and the values that unite us:

Courage: The knight and white horse of Saint George call us to face challenges with courage and stand firmly for what is good.

Hope: The flame of Saint Jude reminds us to live with zeal—our hearts on fire with hope, even in moments of uncertainty.

Faith: The shell of Saint James represents the journey of faith, discipleship, and perseverance as we follow Christ along the path before us.

Peace: The dove of Our Lady of Peace calls us to live in His peace and place our trust in God’s goodness.

Wisdom: The book of Saint Luke reflects our pursuit of wisdom, knowledge, and compassionate service to others.

Courage. Hope. Faith. Peace. Wisdom. These values are the heartbeat of Erie Catholic.

Each symbol is rooted in the story of one campus. Together, they tell the story of all of us—honoring the heritage and traditions that make each school distinctive while reflecting the united community we are continuing to build.

That is the heart of We Are One.

The Meaning Behind Our New Identity

Our renewed Erie Catholic identity brings our shared story together in a single symbol. A strong shield represents the strength, unity, and protection found within our school communities. At its center stands the Cross, reminding us that Christ remains at the heart of everything we do. From the Cross, rays extend outward, representing the light of faith that forms our students, guides our work, and shines through each Erie Catholic campus.

           Looking Toward the Future

In the weeks ahead, families will begin to see the renewed Erie Catholic identity—and refreshed identities for each of our five campuses—come to life across our schools, communications, and community. This renewed brand will help us tell a clearer and more compelling story about who we are. It will strengthen the way we connect and support our campuses while creating a unified foundation for the future of Catholic education in Erie County.

Athletics are an important part of the Erie Catholic student experience, helping students grow in confidence, discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and school pride.

Across the fall, winter, and spring seasons, Erie Catholic students have the opportunity to participate in various athletic programs: basketball, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, and track and field. As participation and interest continue to grow, Erie Catholic is strengthening the structure behind its athletic programs to better support students, families, coaches, and campuses.

For the 2026–2027 athletics year, Erie Catholic School System is introducing Sport Coordinators to provide system-wide leadership for assigned athletic programs.

The Sport Coordinator role was created to strengthen consistency, communication, and organization across Erie Catholic athletics. Each Sport Coordinator will serve as the system-wide point of leadership for their assigned sport, helping to support coaches, students, and families across campuses. This structure allows Erie Catholic to better coordinate practice schedules and available facilities, improve communication among coaches and families, streamline the student-athlete experience across campuses, and continue building athletic programs that reflect the mission and values of the school system.

At Erie Catholic, athletics are about more than practices, games, and competitions. They are another way students learn commitment, humility, perseverance, respect for others, and how to use their gifts in service to a team. Through this new structure, Erie Catholic is continuing to build athletic programs that create meaningful opportunities for students while supporting the whole child and the mission of Catholic education. We look forward to a wonderful year ahead!

Beginning with the 2026-27 school year, Erie Catholic students in kindergarten through fifth grade will no longer participate in a 1:1 take-home Chromebook program.

Under the updated model, classrooms will continue to have access to technology through shared classroom technology carts and dedicated technology instruction, while reducing the amount of daily screen exposure for younger students. The decision follows a growing body of national research and educational discussion regarding the impact of excessive screen time and device dependency on children’s attention, learning, social development, sleep, and overall well-being.

“While schools across the country continue reevaluating the role of technology in elementary education, the Erie Catholic School System is proud to be among the early adopters in our region taking intentional steps to reduce negative impacts of technology use for our youngest learners,” said Travis Washko, president of the Erie Catholic.

Recent research has linked excessive screen exposure in children to challenges with executive functioning, attention, academic performance, sleep quality, and emotional regulation. A 2025 study found that higher screen time among elementary-aged children was associated with lower reading and math achievement. Other studies have highlighted the impact of screens on sleep and brain development including a large study involving approximately 4,500 children ages 8–11 that found children who limited recreational screen time to two hours or less per day demonstrated stronger memory, attention, and language skills than peers with heavier screen exposure.

Erie Catholic leaders emphasized that the shift is not a rejection of technology, but rather a move toward more intentional and age-appropriate use of it.

“Technology remains an important tool in education, and our students will continue developing the digital literacy skills necessary for future success,” said John Schroeck, vice president of educational technology. “But students benefit most from hands-on learning, direct interaction with teachers and classmates, creativity, movement, discussion, and opportunities to focus without constant screen engagement.”

As schools nationwide begin reconsidering the impact of constant device use on young learners, Erie Catholic is taking a proactive approach becoming one of the first school systems in the Erie area to move away from a 1:1 technology model for elementary students.

“Our goal is balance,” Washko added. “Students will still learn how to responsibly use technology, conduct research, collaborate digitally, and build essential skills. At the same time, we want to create more space for deep reading, handwriting, imaginative play, critical thinking, and personal interaction during the elementary years.”

He has served as a regional youth minister, religious education teacher, long-term volunteer missionary at San Lucas Mission in Guatemala, chaplain’s office intern at Gannon University, and chaplain’s assistant at Saint Mary’s Home of Erie. “As Erie Catholic continues to strengthen the ways our campuses form students academically, socially, and spiritually, the Director of Campus Ministry role represents an important investment in our mission and our faith,” said Fr. Kevin Holland, Erie Catholic School System Chaplain. “Chandler brings a heart for ministry, experience working with young people, and a sincere commitment to helping students encounter Christ through prayer, service, retreat experiences, and the daily life of our schools.”

Last weekend, third graders across the Erie Catholic School System celebrated a beautiful milestone in their faith journey: receiving their First Holy Communion.

During this sacramental year, students are learning, praying, and preparing within their religion classes, growing in their understanding of Jesus’ presence in the Eucharist and the meaning of receiving Him in Holy Communion. They also prepare alongside their parish communities, including a retreat day in partnership with our parish faith formation programs that helps students enter more deeply into the significance of this sacrament.

At Erie Catholic, this sacramental preparation is at the heart of who we are. Catholic education is not only about academic excellence; it is about helping to shape the whole child in mind, body, and soul. First Communion reminds us that our community exists to help children know they are loved by God, belong to a faith community, and are called to live with kindness, reverence, gratitude, and joy. It also reminds us that faith formation is strongest when it is lived in partnership. Our teachers help students understand the beauty and meaning of the Eucharist. Our parishes guide and support families through sacramental preparation. Parents and guardians nurture faith at home through prayer, conversation, example, and weekly participation in Mass.

For children, First Communion can feel both sacred and exciting. They may remember the clothing, the family photos, a special meal, or the celebration afterward. But over time, we hope they also come to understand the deeper truth of the day: in the Eucharist, Jesus gives Himself to us. He comes close to us. He strengthens us. He invites us to live as His disciples. As families continue to support children after First Communion, here are a few simple ways to invite more conversation and understanding of the sacrament into your daily family life:

Talk about Communion in everyday language.

Children do not need perfect theological explanations to begin understanding the Eucharist. Simple, steady reminders matter: “Communion is how Jesus stays close to us,” or “When we receive the Eucharist, we are reminded that Jesus loves us and wants to help us live like Him.”

            Prepare together before Mass.

On the way to church, ask your child one simple question: “What do you want to thank Jesus for today?” or “Who should we pray for at Mass?” These small conversations help children connect the Mass to their real lives.

            Model reverence and participation.

Children learn deeply by watching the adults around them. Singing, praying the responses, listening to the readings, genuflecting, and receiving Communion reverently all help children understand that Mass is something meaningful, not just something required.

Make Communion part of the weekly rhythm.

First Communion is the beginning of a lifelong invitation. Attending Mass weekly helps children understand that the Eucharist is not a one-time event, but a continuing source of grace, strength, and connection to God and the Church.

            Keep asking questions.

            F

aith grows through curiosity. Invite children to ask what they wonder about Mass, Communion, prayer, or God. Even when adults do not have every answer, the conversation itself helps children know that faith is something we continue to learn, live, and grow into.

We are grateful to our teachers, parish priests, faith formation leaders, families, and all who helped prepare our students for this sacred milestone. Most of all, we celebrate our students, who approached this sacrament with open hearts and joyful spirits.

At Erie Catholic, we believe students learn best when curiosity meets opportunity. Across all five campuses, teachers are creating classrooms where students are encouraged to explore big ideas, test their theories, and discover how academic concepts come to life through hands-on learning. This commitment to meaningful, inquiry-driven instruction has been especially visible this winter, as students engaged in a range of STEAM activities, relaunched competitive robotics, and earned top recognition at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS). Together, these experiences highlight how deeply STEAM is woven into the fabric of an Erie Catholic education.

has also been buzzing with activity. Their makerspace challenges have prompted students to ask questions, build prototypes, and iterate on their designs. Most recently, sixth graders designed and tested aluminum foil boats to see how many marbles each could hold. After evaluating their first attempt, they worked collaboratively to improve their designs, with two groups successfully creating boats strong enough to hold forty marbles without sinking. Even our youngest learners are encouraged to think outside the box. First graders read

The Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) challenges students to design an experiment, collect and analyze data, and present and defend their conclusions. It is an advanced academic experience, and the success of our students speaks powerfully to the quality of instruction and hands-on learning happening across Erie Catholic. The dedication to hands-on learning within our STEAM classrooms lays the foundation for exceptional achievements in competitions like PJAS.

Inside a gym buzzing with excitement, two Erie Catholic teams—Saint Jude’s Raider Robotics and Saint George’s LEGO Lancers—joined 25 other groups from across the region to compete in FIRST LEGO League’s regional tournament. The energy was contagious as students huddled over their robot tables, coaches leaned in with encouragement, teams cheered loudly for one another, and kindness flowed as freely as the creativity on display.

Their determination paid off as the Raiders earned second place with 335 points in the Robot Competition, a remarkable accomplishment for a first-year team navigating their first official meet. As their coach shared, they didn’t know what to expect walking in, but they left knowing they belonged.

“We knew the competition was experienced and we didn’t have any idea of what to expect at the tournament,” said Brian Rehrig, parent and coach for the Raider Robotics team. “It was a pleasant surprise and testament to the team’s hard work to compete with the other teams so effectively.”

Just a few tables over, Saint George’s LEGO Lancers were having a standout day of their own. Made up mostly of fifth- and sixth-graders, the Lancers earned second place for their Innovation Project, taking home a LEGO trophy that will soon find its place in the campus's display case. Their robot performance was equally impressive, tying for 8th place overall and scoring 230 points.

This season’s FIRST LEGO League challenge was built around the theme “UNEARTHED℠,” inviting students into an archaeological-inspired adventure that connects the past with the future. Teams explored how artifacts, innovations, and discoveries from long ago can inform and inspire the solutions of tomorrow.

While each campus celebrated its own achievements, the weekend was also a testament to what is possible when our system and parents come together to invest in hands-on learning. Parents volunteered hours after school and PTOs helped get things off the ground. Families rearranged schedules to get children to practices and competitions. And through it all, the system’s commitment to STEAM learning created space for students to explore robotics, coding, engineering, and teamwork in ways that strengthen both confidence and academic growth.

According to the MIT Media Lab, research consistently shows that hands-on, experiential learning can increase retention by up to 90% and robotics in particular strengthens problem-solving, spatial reasoning, and mathematical thinking. Meanwhile, programs like FIRST LEGO League are linked to increased confidence, teamwork skills, and long-term interest in STEM. These opportunities align beautifully with how children at this age learn best: through doing, experimenting, collaborating, failing safely, and trying again while surrounded by adults who believe in their potential.

“Opportunities like FIRST LEGO League make challenging students in new ways accessible even to our youngest learners,” said Lisa Panighetti, Vice President of Academic Affairs for Erie Catholic. “It gives students a chance to explore, imagine, build, and work together in ways that reflect the very best of what we want for them academically and personally.”

             Start small:

Pray one decade together before bedtime or dinner. Even a few minutes of prayer can bring peace and closeness.

             Make it meaningful:

Invite each family member to share an intention for their decade, like someone they want to pray for or something they’re thankful for.

             Create a sacred space:

Light a candle or place a small statue or image of Mary nearby to help center your family in prayer.

             Pray on the go:

The Rosary can be prayed in the car on the way to school, while taking a walk together, or wherever your day takes you.

It started like any other recess. The bell rang, laughter filled the air, and third graders raced across the playground to climb, chase, and share stories that only make sense when you’re nine years old.

But that ordinary moment turned extraordinary when one student offered a simple suggestion that changed the day:

“What if we gave up ten minutes of recess to pray?”

The class had just learned about two modern saints — Saint Carlo Acutis and Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati — who were both young people who found holiness not in grand gestures, but in how they lived their everyday lives. Moved by their stories, the students decided to do the same. Without hesitation, the entire class agreed. They ended recess early, gathered inside, and prayed together.

For ten quiet minutes, the joyful sounds of the playground gave way to stillness, reverence, and unity rooted in faith.

What happened in that classroom was more than a sweet gesture. It was a living example of Catholic education in action.

These students recognized the sacred worth of time spent in prayer and how it nurtures their relationship with God and one another. It is a beautiful reminder that the smallest acts of sacrifice and solidarity can transform hearts. Their decision to give up part of recess (something every child treasures) demonstrated a deep understanding of what it means to live faith joyfully, generously, and together.

           The Gift of Stillness

In a world that moves fast, it’s easy to believe that doing more is the path to meaning. But these third graders remind us that sometimes, the holiest thing we can do is stop.

Ten minutes might not sound like much, but it can be sacred time and a chance to listen, to breathe, and to be with God. Their choice shows that holiness can grow in the smallest spaces of an ordinary day, even between jump ropes and soccer games.

What could we set aside — even for ten minutes — to make more room for God?

At Erie Catholic, moments like these reflect what we strive to cultivate every day: not only strong students, but intentional disciples in our children, who see faith as something to live, not just learn. Through lessons inspired by the saints, daily prayer, service projects, and acts of kindness, our students learn that holiness is not about perfection. It’s about presence and choosing God again and again in small, everyday ways.

Parents play a vital role in nurturing the same spirit their children experience at school. Here are a few simple ways families can bring moments of grace into daily life:

             Create sacred pauses:

Invite your child to take a few quiet minutes before dinner or bedtime to thank God for the day and pray for others.

             Connect faith to daily choices:

Talk about how acts of kindness, patience, or forgiveness at school reflect the love of Christ.

             Model small sacrifices:

Let your child see you give up something — time, comfort, or convenience — for prayer or service, and explain why it matters.

             Celebrate the saints:

Share the stories of modern saints like Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati, showing that holiness can look like them — young, joyful, and full of life.

When faith is woven into daily routines, it becomes a source of peace, purpose, and connection, much like it did for those third graders who found grace in just ten minutes of prayer.

             Bless Your Pets at Home:

If your child has another pet at home or simply wants to revisit the experience, take a moment to say a prayer together for your family pets. Encourage your child to say what they’re thankful for about their pet and ask for God's continued care over them.

             Spend Time in Creation:

Take a family walk, visit a local park, or simply sit outside and notice the beauty of nature. Talk about how St. Francis saw every part of creation as a reflection of God’s love.

Be of Service to God's Creatures:

Donate gently used towels or pet food to a local animal shelter or consider collecting items from neighbors, friends, and family to give to a shelter in need. An act of stewardship and compassion aligns perfectly with Catholic Social Teaching.

             Read Together:

Share a story about St. Francis or animals in Scripture. Use this as a chance to talk about how we’re called to love and protect all living things.

Say the Prayer of St. Francis Together:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace...This prayer is a powerful way to reinforce the values of empathy, peace, and humility at home.

A New Chapter for Erie Catholic

As we begin a new school year, I am filled with gratitude and excitement for what lies ahead for the Erie Catholic School System.

First, I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to Janice Whiteman, who served as Erie Catholic's transition director since February, for her extraordinary dedication. In this unique role, she provided steady leadership to our principals, helped prepare our campuses for the year ahead, and guided the system with the same passion for Catholic education that has always defined her service. Because of her hard work, Erie Catholic is well-positioned to continue its mission of forming young hearts and minds in faith, knowledge, and service.

Now, as I step into my role as president, I look forward to building on that strong foundation. Together with our principals, teachers, and families, my focus will be threefold: to welcome more families into our schools by growing enrollment, to joyfully share the great things happening across all of our campuses, and to listen closely to our parents so we can better understand how to serve the needs of today’s students.

But this work cannot rest on our schools alone. The beauty of Catholic education is that it flourishes when it is rooted in the life of the Church and supported by the wider community. To our parents, grandparents, and parishioners: I encourage you to be active participants in this mission. Whether through volunteering in the classroom, supporting events, serving on a parish or school campus committee, or simply sharing your story of why Catholic education matters to you, your involvement strengthens our schools and inspires others to see its value.

I also want to extend a special word to our alumni. Erie has a rich history of Catholic education, and while many beloved schools have closed over the years, their legacy lives on in Erie Catholic. This is your home, too. It is a place where you can gather in fellowship, celebrate your roots, and help ensure that future generations of students experience the same blessings you once received. Your prayers, presence, and support allow us to carry forward a tradition of faith and excellence that has shaped our community for decades.

When we join together in faith, we not only shape the future of our students, but we also shine a light on the positive impact Catholic education has on our greater community. Our students learn to lead with integrity, to serve with compassion, and to see the world through the lens of faith—gifts that ripple far beyond the walls of our classrooms.

Let us begin this school year in prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Catholic education in Erie. As we begin this new year, guide our students to grow in wisdom, faith, and love. Inspire our families, faculty, alumni, and parishioners to work together as stewards of this mission, so that Your presence may be known in our schools and throughout our community. Amen.

          With gratitude and hope,

The Spirit of Wisdom Trivia Contest brought excitement, friendly competition, and a celebration of Catholic education to life as middle schoolers from across the Erie Catholic School System came together to put their faith knowledge to the test. Held at Saint Mark Center, the event welcomed teams of student teams from each of our schools — Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady of Peace, Saint George, Saint James, Saint Jude, and Saint Luke — for an unforgettable morning of learning, laughter, and community.

Rooted in the rich traditions of our Catholic faith, the contest challenged students with questions spanning Scripture, Saints, Sacraments, and Catholic teachings. It was inspiring to see how much these young minds have learned in the classroom and beyond, reflecting their commitment not only to academics but to the spiritual formation that lies at the heart of Catholic education.

The competition was fierce but friendly, with students cheering each other on, sharing moments of triumph, and showing grace under pressure. In the end, it was the team from Blessed Sacrament that emerged victorious, representing their school with both wisdom and sportsmanship.

Beyond the excitement of the competition, the Spirit of Wisdom Trivia Contest highlighted something even more important—the power of coming together as a system of schools. Events like these remind us that while each of our campuses has its own unique spirit and community, we are united by a common mission: to educate the whole child—mind, body, and soul—while nurturing faith, character, and a love of lifelong learning.

After the final question was answered and the winning team was announced, students, staff, and guests gathered for lunch, sharing stories and forging connections that go beyond the walls of their individual schools. These moments of fellowship are a testament to the strength and value of system-wide initiatives, which not only enhance student experiences but build a stronger, more connected Erie Catholic family.

Catholic Schools Week 2025 was a wonderful celebration across the Erie Catholic School System, highlighting the faith, service, and community that make our schools special. From January 26–31, students, teachers, and families from Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady of Peace, Saint George, Saint James, Saint Jude, and Saint Luke came together to honor this year’s theme: Catholic Schools: United in Faith and Community.

The Erie Catholic School System (ECSS) proudly celebrates the start of Catholic Schools Week with a special Mass, led by Bishop Lawrence Persico, on Monday, January 27th, at 9:15 AM. The Mass will take place at the Hagerty Family Event Center and will be attended by ECSS students in grades 6 through 8 from all schools in the system.

This year’s Mass theme, “Celebrating Your Community,” highlights the importance of faith, service, and unity within the Erie community. ECSS students will take active roles in the celebration, serving as altar servers, readers, and gift bearers, demonstrating their leadership and commitment to their faith.

Following the Mass, middle school students will extend the celebration into the community through acts of service. Students will visit local organizations, including Saint Patrick’s Haven, the Mercy Center for Women, and parishes connected to ECSS schools, to offer their time and support. This initiative reflects the core values of Catholic education—faith in action and a dedication to helping those in need.

Erie, PA – The Erie Catholic School System is proud to announce the launch of its "Light of Christ" initiative, a new program that honors current or former Catholic school teachers and staff members who have made a meaningful impact on students' lives. Honorees are presented with a certificate and commemorative pin during a personal award ceremony as a testament to their dedication to Catholic education and the positive difference they have made in the lives of their students.

The first recipient of the "Light of Christ" award is Jan Blakeslee, a beloved retired Saint Jude School kindergarten teacher, who was nominated by Liam Reitzell. Liam, a former student of Mrs. Blakeslee, went through chemotherapy treatments for a brain tumor while in her class and will be forever grateful for the Christ-like care and compassion she showed him.

"I will never forget that year and all the trips we made back and forth to Pittsburgh,” said Liam Reitzell, who is now a sixth-grade student at Saint Jude School. “I missed quite a bit of school, but Mrs. Blakeslee made sure I never fell behind and was always there checking in on me. Whenever I make money, I put some aside to give, save and spend. I’m glad to be able to use my giving money to honor Mrs. Blakeslee. She was a great teacher, but she was much more than that for me.”

In Medieval times, stained glass was used to illustrate biblical stories and the teachings of the Catholic Church. In the same way that beautiful stained-glass artwork in our churches reflects the light of God, educators reflect that light upon their students each day. Erie Catholic School System’s teachers and administrators go to great lengths to not only impart knowledge, but to model Christ’s love.

The "Light of Christ" program aims to shine a spotlight on that transformative role Catholic school teachers and staff members play in shaping the hearts and minds of their students, past and present. By allowing individuals to contribute in honor of a teacher who has made a difference, the initiative serves to celebrate the enduring impact of Catholic education and the values it instills in the community.

Anchored in the Gospel values of Jesus Christ, the Erie Catholic School System, under the guidance of the Diocese of Erie, provides academically distinguished schools that cultivate our students’ potential. Founded in 2017, the Erie Catholic School System unites six K-8 schools in Erie County, PA, offering a values-driven education that emphasizes academic excellence, faith, and service. With a focus on small class sizes and individual attention, our schools prepare students for success in high school and beyond while nurturing their spiritual growth.
